I'm old. I have a hard time arriving home between 11 and midnight on Tuesday, and then arriving home at 1 or 2 a.m. on Thursday after putting in a minimum 12 hour day Wednesday with the Graphic students. But the students put in much longer hours than I do. Somehow they still manage to attend classes and pull down decent grades while putting out a publication that professional journalists consider one of the nation's best weekly college papers.
In a sense, Graphic staffers are similar to student-athletes. Student-athletes have to balance school work, practice and competition--often traveling on weekends and missing classes. Our student-journalists have to balance a commitment to achieving the best possible articles, editorials and newspaper design while achieving the best possible grades in their classes. Many of them also work because the "scholarship" they receive for this co-curricular work has declined over the years from the days when the editor of the Graphic received full tuition reimbursement.
What inspires me is to see a group of young people discussing important issues of the day, and of the campus, and working together as a team to encourage each other to do the best possible job.
This week a special shout out goes to Brittany Yearout, our perspectives editor, for getting her three pages of opinions completed before deadline, allowing this sleepy adviser just a little more rest.
